Home Fireproof Safe Reviews & Information
A guide to finding the best fireproof
safe for home use!
Can you imagine your credit cards, birth certificate, passport, and other
important things being burnt to a crisp because of an unexpected house fire?
It COULD happen. Still, you can replace most of that stuff. But what can’t be
replaced are those precious pictures and mementos you’ve saved all your life. It’s because of this scenario that
many people are seeking out the best fireproof safes for home use to prevent this tragedy.
While there are several fire & burglery safes currently available on the
market, many of them simply don't stack up and will only provide a FALSE sense of security.
Our goal is to educate and arm you with the knowledge, resources and suggestions you need when making such an
important purchase.
What To Look For When Reviewing Fireproof Safes
#1 - UL Certification
Any quality fireproof safe will have have certification from Underwriters
Laboratories which has been the gold standard in product certification since 1894. Make sure it says “UL
Listed” and not just “tested to UL standards.” That phrase is just a marketing ploy
and DOESN'T mean that the safe has the Underwriters Laboratories stamp of
approval.
#2 - Classification
Fireproof safes carry a variety of certifications depending on how they perform in
fire tests. How do they test them? They literally place them in a burn room and its flame on!
Here are the different classifications:
- Class C- Protects paper media for a minimum of an hour.
- Class B – Protects paper media up to 2 hours.
- Class A – Protects paper media up to 4 hours.
The numbers tells you how long the safe will last in fire before the inside
temperature reaches 350 degrees (F) - the burning temperature of paper. Typical house fires burn at 800-1200
degrees depending on the fuel. Average response time of emergency services is 10-30 minutes. So you want at least a
Class C safe.
#3 – Combination
Remember that not all fireproof safes for home are burglar proof as well. You can
get safes that are both but they cost a little more. And if your home safe is portable you want to prevent a thief
from walking away with the whole thing.
For that situation look for home fireproof safes that can be bolted to the floor.
Unless they plan on sawing out the whole floorboard you should be covered! Fireproof safes often look heavy but
their size is mainly due to the thick insulation.
#4 - Construction
The minimum recommended thickness is a half-inch thick door and quarter-inch thick
walls. A great feature to look for in a fireproof safe is a re-locking device. If the lock is jiggered
around or tampered, inside it automatically relocks the bolts.
Keep in mind also there are two types of fireproof safes.
Models that protect mainly paper and others that will protect media like computer hard drives (it depends on
the burn temperature). Make sure you buy the level of protection you need.

An actual First Alert waterproof fire safe review
from Amazon:
I wanted a decent, not too expensive, home safe for collectible, documents,
and pictures. Wanted this to be difficult for burglars to take or get into or take. Plus, wanted
something that would protect my valuables in case of a fire and therefore water
damage.
This safe if pretty darn cool for the cost. It has a handle
on the back and 2 wheels at the back base to allow for easy 1 person movement on a single floor. My
wife and I moved it up stairs ourselves without problems. Safe has lots of room for just about all
basic papers, pictures, jewelry, etc. I would most CERTAINLY buy this product again and recommend
it to anyone.
